I record my beers ratings at RateBeer and I've slowly been adding them to FoodFriend. As recommended by Ratebeer, I use a hedonistic rating scale for my ratings. This means that I disregard beer style and attempt to evaluate the beer solely on my enjoyment of the experience. As a brewer, I am mindful of beer styles, but I also enjoy brewing beers which aren't conceived with a pre-determined style in mind.
While I wouldn't claim to be a professional, I have helped judged several homebrewing competitions in the past. These events were the RateBeer Homebrew Challenge and the 2005 Kentucky State Fair. During these competitions I rate "to style", which means that the beer is judged with consideration for its adherence to the specific beer style. For more information on beer styles, check out the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) style guide.
While I have not recently judged any events, I hope to reconnect with the LAGERS homebrewing group in Louisville and take part in future homebrew judgings. I always enjoy trying new homebrews!
